GE dryer call: a slipped belt and damaged panels

Mark and Jacob from Appliance Repair American. A real field visit from the Tech Life series.

The team heads to a GE laundry unit with a belt ready. The old belt had slipped off the pulley. Once inside, they also find bent panels and screws in the wrong places from past work.

Field notes: belt repair and time on the job

  1. Bring a belt for the no-start call.

The dryer would not start. Mark brings a belt so the team has a likely repair part on hand.

  2. Check the belt and pulley.

The belt was not fully broken. Jacob found small cracks and a belt that had slipped off the pulley.

  3. Allow time to put the dryer back together.

Putting the machine back together takes extra work because of the earlier assembly. The part swap is only one part of the visit.

All right, so this next one here, we have a contract with a large apartment complex and it's a GE laundry unit. The customer complaint is that the dryer isn't even starting. So I'm coming prepared, prepared with a belt. Hopefully we'll get a one-stop repair there, but we'll report as soon as we're done. Get out and get it. Get it. I'm getting it. I'm getting it from here. Hopefully it looks like it might have just slipped off the pool.

Okay, we've got to check it all the way down. The pool is good. Okay, you're in good hands. Okay, so we just wrapped it.

Up here at the apartment complex with that dryer that wasn't turning on. What'd you find there, Jake? So the belt slipped off of the pulley. The belt did have a couple little small shapes and tears in it, but it wasn't broken. So it actually just popped off the pulley. Probably lost tension because one of the cracks, but while we were there to get the machine back together is a bit of a pain. The other all-sheep metal, they get wonky, especially dryers.

They get hot and expand. They get cold. They contract again. But the tenant actually told on the last repair guy that was there,

she said when she first moved into the apartment, the entire thing was disassembled and in pieces. So whatever repair guy came back to fix it, he put so many screws in the wrong place. Some of the plate metal was all bent out of shape. You know, things that were supposed to be on top were actually underneath, and he really just did a butcher job. And that, you know, we had to un-butcher it, but the damage was already done.

So it actually took a little longer than it was supposed to.

Yeah, it was a real pain in the ass to put that thing back together because all the sheet metal was all tweaked.
